Petco Pay Mastercard credit card verification
The Petco Pay Mastercard is a cashback credit card for pet lovers of all shapes and sizes. The card offers impressive rewards for purchases from Petco, including a special discount on the first purchase – all with no annual fee.
How to earn rewards
The Petco Mastercard returns money on different categories of purchases. The most important of these categories are Petco purchases. The card earns 8% on purchases at participating Petco locations and on petco.com. The card also brings a 2% rebate on supermarket purchases and a 1% rebate on all other purchases. New cardholders will also receive a $25 friend reward if they spend $500 outside of Petco within the first 90 days of approval.
Cash Back applies to rewards from friends
An 8% cashback card sounds almost too good to be true – and that’s the case with the Petco Pay Mastercard. Rewards are not US dollar cashback but Petco’s Pals Rewards program. The Pals Rewards program allows cardholders to redeem their money for treats for their four-legged friends, food for their pets, or other essentials to keep their furry (or not-so-furry) companions healthy and happy.
Reward points are calculated at a rate of five Pals Reward Dollars for every 100 points earned by a member, which members may use toward a $5 discount on any future purchase. Pals Rewards points expire after one year if the loyalty program member has a Petco Pay loyalty card or the Petco Pay Mastercard.
Donations at every Purr hunt
Petco takes its charitable commitment seriously, and it shows in the Petco Pay Mastercard. Using the card for one purchase is enough for the company to donate a portion of every dollar spent to help animals in need. Petco donates to the Petco Foundation with every purchase of a Petco Pay credit card – a great feature.
Other Petco Mastercard credit card Features
The Petco Pay Mastercard credit card also offers several other perks for pets, including a free birthday present for the account holder and the ability to personalize the card with a photo of your pet at no additional cost.
Petco PALS Rewards members also enjoy special funding for eligible Petco purchases or Petco vet visits. However, this particular funding option excludes outside vets affiliated with Petco (like Thrive Vet Hospitals) or purchases from Just Food for Dogs Kitchens.
Other notable Petco credit card features include:
- No annual fees
- Mastercard Zero Fraud Liability Insurance
- Protection against ID theft
- Global Mastercard service
5 things you need to know about Petco Pay credit cards
Petco credit cards were designed to help pet owners earn rewards for their furry friends’ spending. Cardholders can even personalize their cards with a favorite photo of their beloved pet friend (plus receive an annual birthday present).
But even dedicated pet owners who spend heavily on pet products at Petco should avoid these private label credit cards and instead opt for an all-purpose card with more flexible rewards.
Here are five things you should know about Petco Pay credit cards.
1. There are two versions of the Petco Pay credit card
Petco offers two credit cards, both issued by Comenity Bank. Neither has an annual fee, and both can earn rewards:
- Petco Pay Credit Card: This card can only be used at Petco stores and is also known as a closed-loop credit card.
- Petco Pay Mastercard Credit Card: This version can be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted. Business cards that can be used more widely are known as “open loop” cards.
You must first be a member of Petco’s free loyalty program, Pals Rewards, to apply for these cards. Once you’ve logged into your account, fill out an application for both cards.
If you are only interested in the Store Only Closed Loop credit card, you can tick that on your application. Otherwise, you are entitled to the Mastercard first. If you are not approved, you may still be eligible for the business-only credit card.
BestCreditCards3 Tip: Every time you make a transaction with your card, Petco donates 25 cents to the Petco Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to animal welfare.
2. The pay rate is reasonable…
Cardholders of both card versions get 8% back on Petco purchases.
The Petco Mastercard version also earns:
- 2% discount on supermarket purchases.
- 1% back on all other purchases.
However, the 8% in the back isn’t as generous as it sounds. That’s because all Pals Rewards members earn 5% on every Petco purchase, whether they have the card or not. The Petco Credit Card gives you an additional 3% back on Petco purchases, for a total of 8%. Not bad, but probably not enough to make this card worthwhile for the average Petco buyer.
If you’re enrolled in the Pal Rewards program and put your Petco purchases on a credit card with 2% cashback on everything, you’ll still get a total of 7% back on in-store purchases. That’s a little lower, but your credit card rewards are a lot more flexible.
3. But the rewards are confusing
Although rewards are advertised as percentages, you earn rewards in the form of Pals Rewards points, which can only be used at Petco.
Earn 1.6 points for every Petco purchase. Buyers with the Mastercard version also get 0.4 points for groceries and 0.2 points for everything else. (Yes, we’re talking fractional points here.)
This means that with a $100 purchase, you get 160 points to spend at Petco instead of the $8 you would expect from the 8% rewards rate.
100 Petco points equal $5 in Petco rewards.
4. Your point don’t have nine lives
Aside from confusing win rates, Petco rewards are pretty limiting:
Once you reach 100 points you will receive a $5 credit that you must manually add to your Pals Rewards account. You can do this online or by calling Petco Customer Care.
Rewards expire one year after you earn them.
If you return a purchase and the points you have earned are removed from your account after you have already used the rewards, you could end up with a negative points balance. Any new rewards will first be used to bring this balance down to zero before you start accumulating points again. And if you return something you used rewards for, you won’t get those rewards back.
BestCreditCards3 Tip: Get 20% off your next purchase if you’re approved for one of Petco’s credit cards. However, you are only eligible for this discount if you take advantage of the offer on the same day you apply for the card.
5. Funding options are available
Certain purchases may qualify for a finance plan, but if you select a plan, you will not receive any rewards for that purchase.
The terms available to you depend on how much you are spending on a particular trade. You may be eligible for:
- 6 months of financing for transactions with a minimum purchase of $299.
- 9 months of financing for transactions with a minimum purchase of $399.
- 12 months of financing on transactions with a minimum purchase of $499.
This option may be useful for pet parents using Petco vets, but not all locations are eligible.
Most cardholders receive deferred interest on financing plans. According to an email from Petco, if you apply for financing in a state that prohibits deferred interest, you’ll receive an interest waiver.
BestCreditCards3 tip: If you waive interest, the interest only accrues after your installment plan has expired and you only have to pay interest on the remaining balance. But with deferred interest, they immediately accumulate. As long as you repay the balance before the end of the financing term, you do not have to pay this interest. But if you don’t, you’ll have problems with everything – not just the interest on your remaining balance.
The ability to fund purchases is a nice perk of a credit card, but it’s not unique to Petco credit cards. If you look around you may get a better deal elsewhere. For example, you may want to use a credit card with a 0% APR induction period, or a payment plan from some card issuers, such as APR. Examples include AmEx’s Pay It® and Plan It® options or Chase’s My Chase Plan option.

Do you need to apply for the Petco Mastercard credit card?
Do you shop at Petco often? Then the Petco Pay Mastercard credit card could be something for you. The card offers up to 8% cashback (in the form of Pals Rewards dollars with every purchase from Petco, plus a 2% cashback on groceries). Add to that a 20% discount on your first purchase and a $25 Pals reward for meeting the minimum spend requirement, too — as is the donation every time the card is swiped.
However, the interest rates with the Petco Card are anything but exciting. Retail cards generally have above-average APRs, and the Petco card is no different. Sure, those with excellent credit can expect a rate of around 18%, but for many, the APR will be in the mid-twenties. Luckily, special financing can help avoid interest congestion.
Overall, the Petco Pay Mastercard credit card is a decent shopping card for pet lovers looking to save — and use those savings on even more treats for their favorite friend.
